Designing Objects That Improve With Use

Helms, Michael Ray; Leifer, Larry // 2009
A new design methodology called "agathonic design" is proposed; one that specifies the intentional design of objects so they improve with use. Individual and/or group interactions with an ...

DesignWebs: Interactive Organizational Memory

Oberoi, Sharad; Finger, Susan // 2009
Knowledge generated during the design process frequently goes uncaptured, and when it is captured, it is usually poorly organized and buried in obscure documents. Effective capture of both semantic ...

Developing a Method for Assessing Product Inclusivity

Waller, Sam; Goodman-Deane, Joy; Langdon, Pat; Johnson, Daniel; Clarkson, P. John // 2009
In order to develop more inclusive products and services, designers need a means of assessing the inclusivity of existing products and new concepts. Following previous research on the development of ...

Developing creative engineers: a design approach to engineering education

de Vere, Ian // 2009
Despite an increase in calls for reform of engineering education, engineering faculties continue to focus somewhat narrowly on the science of engineering, without sufficient curriculum opportunities ...

Developing IDPEO - a Multidisciplinary Approach to Product Realization

Wiktorsson, Magnus; Wikström, Anders; Jackson, Mats; Ekman, Sten // 2009
On the background of a changing industrial landscape and key elements of the realization of complex integrated products, this paper discuss and explore an "innovative" approach towards ...

Development of a Certification Process for Microenergy Systems

Kebir, Noara Zohra // 2009
Actually more than 1.6 billion people lack access to electricity and 2.4 billion rely on traditional biomass for cooking and heating. Most of those households and small enterprises are helping ...

Development of a framework for assessing sustainability in new product development

Sutcliffe, Laura Francesca Rose; Maier, Anja Martina; Moultrie, James; Clarkson, P. John // 2009
The area of sustainability in business is crowded with discussion and tools that are geared towards change at the organisational level (e.g. Corporate Social Responsibility). At the product level, ...

Development of a generic integrated approach for parametric associative CAD systems

Salehi, Vahid; McMahon, Chris // 2009
Currently one of the possibilities to create virtual CAD components is the application of parametric and associative CAD systems in automotive product development processes. To achieve the full ...

Development of an Evolutionary Based Design Method

Kittel, Konstantin // 2009
The Auto Genetic Design Theory (ADT) uses analogies between evolution and activities in the design processes to ensure, that the best possible solution can be found, within the given boundaries. ...

Development of an Interdisciplinary Product Model to Support the Optimization of the Product Development Process

Szeghö, K.; Bercsey, T.; Eigner, M. // 2009
The main objective of the research presented in the study is to accelerate the improvement of complex products. In the first step, the product life cycle is examined as a whole (taking into ...

Development of Mathematical Models for Secure Collaboration in Product Lifecycle Management

Liu, Wei; Wang, Min; Zhang, Da Yong; Zeng, Yong // 2009
This paper formalizes product lifecycle management (PLM) based on axiomatic theory of design modeling. Collaboration and secure collaboration issues in PLM are of major concern. Mathematical models ...

Development of Rubric-Based Assessment Methodology for Student Design Projects

Woodhall, Thomas F. C.; Strong, David S. // 2009
Education research strongly links methods of course assessment with the student learning process. In open-ended engineering design courses, assessment based on student deliverables as ...

Development of Scene Transition Nets (STN) GUI Simulator for Service Flow Simulation

Tateyama, Takeshi; Shimomura, Yoshiki; Kawata, Seiichi // 2009
Recently, a new academic field, "service engineering" has been very actively investigated. However, there are few effective software tools to simulate and evaluate services designed based on ...

Development of Standardized Tests for Design Skills

Shah, Jami; Woodward, Jay; Smith, Steve // 2009
A number of cognitive skills relevant to design have been identified. Formal methods for evaluating these skills in engineering students are needed. Towards that goal we are developing a battery of ...

Digital Human Modeling for Ergonomic Analysis of Refrigerated Cabinets

Colombo,Giorgio; Ponti,De Giorgio; Rizzi,Caterina // 2009
This paper presents a roadmap to evaluate ergonomic factors of refrigerated display units integrating virtual human models with virtual prototyping techniques in order to optimize the product ...

Dimensions of Decision Situations in Complex Product Development

Jupp, Julie Rose; Eckert, Claudia; Clarkson, John // 2009
Decision-making is a multifaceted phenomenon. Yet in design, many models describing decision-making and approaches to decision support are based on simplistic process models and assumptions. This ...

Disruptive vs. Sustaining Technology and the Design Process

Kaldate, Amit; Thurston, Deborah; Rood, Mark // 2009
The preliminary stages of design often focus on how to configure the artifact in such a way as to beat the existing competition in a performance attribute widely available in the marketplace. But ...

Distributed Modeling of Component DSM

Tilstra, A. H.; Seepersad, C. C.; Wood, K. // 2009

Does sponsored studio teaching undermine or facilitate the growth of the design profession?

Liem, Andre // 2009
Changing technologies, attitudes and perceptions within industry and society has continuously stimulated and challenged the design profession. For some actors and organisations in the design field, ...

Domain-Spanning Design Tools for Heterogeneous Systems

Brix, Torsten; Reeßing, Michael // 2009
In the past it was often adequate to assemble an overall system from separately developed and optimized parts. However, recent developments in engineering show the need to integrate mechanical, ...

DRED 2.0: A Method and Tool for Capture and Communication of Design Knowledge Deliberated in the Creation of Technical Products

Bracewell, Rob; Gourtovaia, Marina; Moss, Michael; Knott, David; Wallace, Ken; Clarkson, P. John // 2009
This paper addresses the general issue of software tool support for designers, helping them to structure, to communicate and to document activities of generation, evaluation and decision. Here the ...

Boolean Searches

The following examples demonstrate some search strings that use boolean operators:

  • design community
Find rows that contain at least one of the two words.
  • +design +community
Find rows that contain both words.
  • +design community
Find rows that contain the word “design”, but rank rows higher if they also contain “community”.
  • +design -community
Find rows that contain the word “design” but not “community”.
  • +design ~community
Find rows that contain the word “design”, but if the row also contains the word “community”, rate it lower than if row does not.
  • +design +(>community <decisions)
Find rows that contain the words “design” and “community”, or “design” and “decisions” (in any order), but rank “design community” higher than “design decisions”
  • design*
Find rows that contain words such as “design”, “designs”, “designing”, or “designer”.
  • "some words"
Find rows that contain the exact phrase “some words” (for example, rows that contain “some words of wisdom” but not “some noise words”). Note that the " characters that enclose the phrase are operator characters that delimit the phrase. They are not the quotation marks that enclose the search string itself.
