Abstract
This paper determines the maximum practical economic size to which a vertical cantilever beam, in the form of Len Lye's kinetic sculpture Blade, can be built. The artists intentions in the performance of Blade where formulated in engineering terms and a set of design constraint equations produced. This study gave a quantitive measure of the performance of candidate materials for a vertical cantilever. High strength titanium alloys were found to be significantly cheaper than a low alloy steels when considered on a cost per performance basis.
