ICoRD 13 - The 4th International Conference on Research into Design

Thursday 26th of April 2012

The 4th International Conference on Research into Design (ICoRD'13) will be held 7-9 January 2013, at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Chennai, India.

The theme for ICoRD'13 is "Global Product Development".

ICoRD'13 is the fourth in a series of conferences intended to be held every two years in India to bring together the international community from diverse areas of design practice, teaching and research, to: showcase cutting edge research about design to the stakeholders; aid the ongoing process of developing and extending the collective vision through emerging research challenges and questions; and provide a platform for interaction, collaboration and development of the community in order for it to take up the challenges to realise the vision.

The conference is an endorsed event of the Design Society. The organising committee invites submissions of research papers in all areas of design. This includes all dimensions, e.g., people, product, tools, processes and environments of design, with research results contributing to its understanding and support.

Important Dates:
Abstracts Due: 30 May 2012
Notification of Abstract Acceptance: 6 June 2012
Full Papers Due: 22 July 2012
Notification of Acceptance: 23 September 2012 Final Papers Due: 7 October 2012 Copyright Transfer Form Due: 15 October 2012

Please see the events section of the Design Society homepage or the ICoRD 13 homepage for more details.

Design Society Membership Fee - Changes according to the World Bank classification

Friday 23rd of March 2012

The aim of the Design Society is to support building a truly world-wide community for all aspects of development and design. The Society feels obliged to help scientists and practitioners from developing countries to join in.
For this reason, in 2010 a completely new membership fee structure was introduced: The Design Society’s membership fees are differentiated according to the gross national income (GNI) per capita of the member’s home country, using the World Bank Atlas method (for details see the World Bank homepage). This means:
- Members and Fellows: A membership fee of 100/75/50/25 GBP for countries in the World Bank categories “high income”/”upper middle income”/”lower middle income”/”low income”
- Associate Members and retired Members: A membership fee of 40/30/20/10 GBP for countries in the World Bank categories “high income”/”upper middle income”/”lower middle income”/”low income”
The World Bank updates its data around the beginning of each year. The Design Society follows these updates, with revisions valid beginning from the next period of membership renewal (01/07 of the respective year).
Please see the membership section of the Design Society’s homepage for further information, the current table of countries, their allocation according to the World Bank Atlas method classification, and the related Design Society membership fee.
Notable changes (countries where we have or have had Members) for 2012 are:
- China, now “upper middle income”, fee 75/30 GBP for Members/Associate Members
- Ghana, now “lower middle income”, fee 50/20 GBP for Members/Associate Members
- Poland, now “high income”, fee 100/40 GBP for Members/Associate Members
Please contact membership(at)designsociety(dot)org if you have any questions.

IPD 2012: The 9th Workshop on Integrated Product Development

Tuesday 14th of February 2012

IPD 2012: The 9th Workshop on Integrated Product Development

The 9th Workshop on Integrated Product Development (IPD 2012) is again organised by the Chair of Information Technologies in Mechanical Engineering at the Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg, Germany (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sándor Vajna).

It will take place on 05.-07.09.2012 at the Hotel "Elbresidenz" in Magdeburg, Germany.

The bi-annual IPD Workshops are events endorsed by the Design Society.

Based on discussions at ICED 11 and at other events, it seems to make a lot of sense to discuss the issue of fundamentals of Integrated Design Engineering (IDE) and their significance in an international context. IDE is the further development of IPD (IPD 2.0), based on eight equivalent product dimensions.

Of course, also other topics of IPD are welcome for presentation.

As in previous IPD workshops the focus will be both on presentations and content-related discussions. Young scientists are especially encouraged to present their research results.

Deadline for submission (full papers): 15.08.2012

For more information please contact Mr. Andreas Wünsch (andreas.wuensch@ovgu.de).

DFX 2012: 23rd Symposium on Design for X

As intended by its founder Prof. Meerkamm, the conference series “Symposium Design for X” is continued by Prof. Paetzold, Prof. Wartzack and Prof. Krause in collaboration.

The 23rd DFX symposium will take place 04.-05.10.2012 in Bamberg, Germany, and will be hosted by the chair of engineering design KTmfk of the University of Erlangen (Prof. Wartzack).

As before, the 23st Symposium offers a platform to young postgraduates to present and discuss their new approaches in the field of product development. Industry representatives and professors will enrich these discussions with their manifold experience.

Main topics of this year’s symposium are

- human-centered design,
- tolerances/ robust design,
- lightweight design and
